Amongst the many poems I read for class this week "Lonely Hearts" by Wendy Cope grasped my attention the most. When I read the title I assumed the poem would be about solitude, sadness, individuals for ever alone (I was almost right). "Lonely Hearts" is a poem about an individual male desperately seeking for love and does so in an ad. He is alone and has probably been alone for a long time since he doesn't care about who replies back as long as there is someone "willing" to do so. This poem is quite interesting and I would most likely recommend it to friends.
Interesting, I don't recall covering this story. Either way, by how you explain, this draws back into personal past agendas (well somewhat). But to generally think of it...aren't we all seekers and consumers of love? Guaranteed, not all desperate. But still. Shocking how the role here is being taken by a male and not a female (as our typical society would make it). Nice to think of a gender switch in the act of love, emotion, desperation, and any other elements similar in this poem.

ReplyDeleteI did feel the same way when I first see the title "Lonely Hearts". I thought it would be something very personal and contains some elements of sadness. However, what the author actually writes is not what I really expected to read since her way of expressing his loneliness is very direct and adventurous.
